چکیده

This study investigated the transitions between affective states (i.e., boredom, flow, confusion, frustration, delight, and surprise) during learning while college students were tutored in computer literacy by AutoTutor, an automated tutoring system with natural language dialogue. Videos of participants’ faces and the interaction histories were recorded and then played back for the participants to judge their own affective states. We developed a metric to measure the relative likelihood of transitioning from an affective state at time ti to a subsequent affective state at time ti+1. Several significant trajectories between affective states were identified. Instructional implications are discussed in the context of an expanded version of a cognitive disequilibrium model.

Brain systems underlying the affective and social monitoring of actions: an integrative review.

Action monitoring allows the swift detection of conflicts, errors, and the rapid evaluation of outcomes. These processes are crucial for learning, adaptive behavior, and for the regulation of cognitive control. Our review discusses neuroimaging and electrophysiological studies that have explored the contribution of emotional and social factors during action monitoring. Meta-analytic brain activ...

Differential Affective Experiences in Narrative-Centered Learning Environments

Affect has been the subject of increasing attention in cognitive accounts of learning. Many intelligent tutoring systems now seek to adapt pedagogy to student affective and motivational processes in an effort to increase the effectiveness of tutorial interaction and improve learning outcomes. To this end, recent work has begun to investigate the emotions experienced during learning in a variety...

Patient physiological monitoring with machine learning

The task of discovering novel medical knowledge from complex, large-scale and high-dimensional patient data, collected during care episodes, is central to innovation in medicine. The recognition of complex trajectories in multivariate time-series data requires effective models and representations for the analysis and matching of functional data. In this chapter, we describe a method based on Ga...

Affective States Influence Spatial Cue Utilization during Navigation

Humans navigate complex environments effectively by identifying and monitoring environmental spatial cues (i.e., landmarks). Previous research has shown that affective states modulate cue utilization, attentional focus, and memory. Like other human behaviors, navigation is performed within an affective context and thus may fall under its influence. The present study examines the influence of af...

Running head: EMOTE-ALOUD DURING LEARNING Emote-Aloud during Learning with AutoTutor: Applying the Facial Action Coding System to Cognitive-Affective States during Learning

In an attempt to discover the facial action units for affective states that occur during complex learning, this study adopted an emote-aloud procedure in which participants were recorded as they verbalized their affective states while interacting with an intelligent tutoring system (AutoTutor). Participants’ facial expressions were coded by two expert raters using Ekman’s Facial Action Coding S...
